JA-SIG Board of Directors Announces uPortal Roadmap

September 27, 2006 - JA-SIG uPortal is the Open Source Enterprise Portal Framework built for
and by Higher Education. Today, it is deployed at more than a thousand
institutions worldwide and has achieved a remarkable level of maturity
and performance. JA-SIG uPortal scales well to support communities of
tens of thousands of users, and is used in a wide variety of Higher
Education contexts.

Building on the success of uPortal 2.0, last year the JA-SIG Board of
Directors launched a "call-to-action" of vision building and
requirements gathering for the next generation Enterprise Portal
framework, JA-SIG uPortal 3.0. JA-SIG uPortal 3.0, initiated with
funding from the Andrew F. Mellon Foundation as part of the Sakai
project, represents an improved framework for future growth,
performance, and stability of open source Enterprise Portal
implementations in Higher Education.

The first release candidate of JA-SIG uPortal 3.0 will be available for
developer review, prototyping, and performance testing in time for the
15th bi-annual JA-SIG conference in Atlanta, Georgia, December 3rd 5th.
JA-SIG uPortal 3.0 is being led by Eric Dalquist, University of
Wisconsin-Madison, and greatly assisted by significant resources from
Unicon, Inc.

As JA-SIG uPortal 3.0 matures and evolves in successive iterations, it
will introduce features such as an AJAX framework, drag-and-drop
capabilities, and powerful and flexible layout tools. As the community
adopts and transitions to uPortal 3.0, expect to see tools and planning
guides for migrating existing deployments. In the meantime, JA-SIG
uPortal 2.0 continues to thrive under the care of institutional
developers and commercial partners such as Sungard Higher Education
and Unicon, meeting the needs of the higher education community.
